What is happening to the Brookline Chamber of Commerce?

Following a vote by the Brookline Chamber’s board to cease operations as a standalone 501(c)(6) organization, the Brookline Chamber of Commerce is closing at the end of March 2026. The Charles River Regional Chamber is welcoming Brookline’s business community going forward.

I’m an active Brookline Chamber member. What happens to my membership?

Your membership transfers automatically to the Charles River Regional Chamber — no application required, with no gap in membership. You’ll have access to a regional network of 1,200+ businesses and nonprofits, year-round programming, and an active advocacy presence at the local and state level.

What if I wasn’t a Brookline Chamber member?

All Brookline businesses and nonprofits are invited to join the Charles River Regional Chamber. You don’t need to have been a Brookline Chamber member to be welcome here. If you’ve been on the fence about joining a chamber — or simply never had the chance — this is a great moment to connect with a regional network that includes your neighbors and your community. Why did the Brookline Chamber’s board make this decision?

Chambers of commerce across the country have faced mounting pressures — rising operational costs, changing member expectations, and the increasing demands of running effective advocacy and programming. On the other hand, many regional chambers are thriving because businesses appreciate having access to a broader array of future clients and programs. The Brookline Chamber’s board decided to cease operations as a standalone organization while ensuring members would land in a strong place, with no disruption to benefits or services.

Why the Charles River Regional Chamber?

Brookline has always been part of a broader ecosystem of communities west of Boston — connected by geography, by the businesses and nonprofits that serve residents across town lines, and by shared interests in transportation, housing, workforce development, and local economic vitality.

The Charles River Regional Chamber exists to strengthen that ecosystem. Businesses across Brookline, Newton, Needham, Watertown, and Wellesley are natural partners — for referrals, for shared resources within industries, and for the kind of peer connections that help businesses grow. And when it comes to advocacy, a unified regional voice carries far more weight with state and local officials than any single community can on its own.

This isn’t about Brookline being swallowed by a bigger organization. It’s about Brookline taking its place in a regional community that’s better and more effective together.

But isn’t Brookline not on the Charles River?

Fair question — and technically, no. Brookline sits along the Muddy River, not the Charles. But the Muddy River is a tributary of the Charles, which makes Brookline very much part of the same watershed. It's also part of the same regional ecosystem of communities, businesses, and shared economic interests that the Charles River Regional Chamber serves. 

What happens to Brookline’s identity and local presence?

It continues — with more resources behind it. A dedicated Brookline Business Coalition is being established within the Charles River Regional Chamber to ensure continued local engagement and programming.

What about Brookline Chamber legacy events like First Light and the Chobee Hoy Award?

Preserving Brookline’s signature events is a stated priority of this transition. First Light, the Chobee Hoy Award, and other beloved Brookline programs are expected to continue under the Charles River Regional Chamber. Details will be confirmed and communicated as the calendar is finalized.

How do I know if I’m a member?

If you were an active Brookline Chamber member in good standing as of March 31 2026, you are automatically a member of the Charles River Regional Chamber, with no disruption to your benefits or services. You will receive a welcome communication confirming your membership and providing access to the member portal. If you’re unsure of your status, contact brookline@charlesriverchamber.com.

What if my membership had lapsed or I was behind on dues?

Automatic membership applies to members who were active and in good standing as of March 31, 2026. If your status is uncertain or you’d like to re-engage, reach out to us at brookline@charlesriverchamber.com and we’ll work through it with you.

What will I pay in dues?

We will review membership rates from both organizations and implement transitional pricing for the first year where possible — with the goal of securing the most favorable introductory rate so you have the chance to get to know the Charles River Chamber and experience the value of membership firsthand.

Are there special rates for retail stores?

Yes. Independent single-location brick-and-mortar retail stores are eligible for free membership in the Charles River Regional Chamber. This is part of the chamber’s longstanding commitment to small, locally owned retail businesses and its Small Shops initiative. What are the standard membership rates?

Rates are based on the size and type of your organization. Standard tiers include:

•     Sole Proprietor / Owner-Operator: $375/year 
•     General Business, 2–10 employees: $425/year 
•     General Business, 11–30 employees: $500/year
•     General Business, 31–50 employees: $625/year
•     General Business, 51–100 employees: $850/year
•     General Business, 101–300 employees: $1,300/year
•     Retail / Restaurant (single, locally owned): $345/year
•     Retail / Restaurant (group or franchise): $375/year
•     Hotel: $375 base + $5 per room
•     Small/Medium Nonprofit (under $5M revenue): $345/year (Intro rate $325)
•     Large Nonprofit (over $5M revenue): $550/year
•     Banks: deposit-based rate, $1,000 minimum

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Monthly installment plans (charged automatically to your credit/debit card) are available for most tiers, subject to a 10% administrative fee to cover processing costs.

Does my membership cover my whole team?

Yes. Your membership covers your entire organization — all employees can attend events and access member benefits and resources at no additional per-person cost.

I was already a member of both the Brookline Chamber and the Charles River Regional Chamber. What happens?

Nothing changes for your Charles River Regional Chamber membership — your existing account, renewal date, and rate all stay exactly as they are. You will not be double-billed or issued a second membership. The transition simply means Brookline-only members are now joining you in the same organization. What if I don’t want to join the Charles River Regional Chamber?

That’s entirely your choice. While we hope you’ll give us a chance — especially given the expanded network and programming now available to Brookline businesses — membership is not mandatory. If you decide it’s not the right fit, simply let us know at brookline@charlesriverchamber.com and we won’t pursue renewal. No pressure, no obligation.

What are the membership terms? Will I be automatically renewed?

Membership dues represent an annual commitment. You’ll be invoiced for renewal on your anniversary date and can pay in full or via monthly installments.

What’s the best way to get started as a new member?

The best first step is attending an event — even just one. It’s the quickest way to meet people, get a feel for the community, and figure out where you want to plug in. From there, joining a committee or Small Networking Group tends to be where lasting relationships get built.

How do I find and register for events?

All events are listed on the chamber’s website and in the member portal. You can register online, and many events are free or discounted for members.

Can I host a chamber event at my Brookline business?

Yes — and we’d love to bring events to Brookline. If you’re interested in hosting a Community Night, networking event, or another program at your location, contact gmantello@charlesriverchamber.com to start the conversation.

What about Small Networking Groups — what are those?

Small Networking Groups are one of the chamber’s most popular and distinctive offerings — and often the first thing members wish they’d discovered sooner.

Each group is made up of 8–12 members who meet regularly throughout the year. They’re intentionally small, intentionally consistent, and designed for real relationship-building rather than the surface-level connections that can come from large events. Members refer business to each other, share resources and advice within their industries, and become a genuine professional support network over time.

Groups are organized around shared interests, industries, or geographies — so you’re meeting people who are actually relevant to your work. If you’re someone who finds large events draining or unproductive, a Small Networking Group is often the entry point that changes the chamber experience entirely.

I don’t really have time for events. Is there still value in membership for me?

Absolutely. Events are just one part of what membership offers — and for many members, they’re not the most valuable part.
